Digicel Focuses on the Children of Bermuda

HAMILTON, BERMUDA – JUNE 10th, 2009: Digicel Bermuda Limited believes in supporting the community and this year Digicel donated money to The Coalition for the Protection of Children and also to Coach Roderick Spencer’s 5th Annual Youth Basketball Clinic.

Digicel’s donation to The Coalition for the Protection of Children will fund the “Breakfast for Every Child” program. For the past two years, The Coalition has served a nutritious, healthy breakfast consisting of cereal, milk, juice, yogurt, and fruit free of charge every school day to the students at Victor Scott Primary School. This program will expand into three additional schools in September 2009 thereby providing thousands of Bermuda’s children with the opportunity to have a healthy breakfast every school day.

Sheelagh Cooper, Executive Director of The Coalition for the Protection of Children stated, “Providing children with a healthy breakfast is an integral part of their academic success. Numerous studies have highlighted this and indeed, we have seen it at Victor Scott Primary where the end of the year test scores increased across the board with results ranging from a 32% to a 67% improvement. We are grateful to Digicel for their support of “The Breakfast for Every Child” program. Their contribution will help ensure that every student gets the best possible start to their school day.”

Digicel’s donation to the Coach Roderick Spencer’s Basketball Clinic will allow them to donate spots in the clinic to other youth groups and also to kids that can not afford the $125 signup cost. This year they have two children from the Big Brother and Big Sister groups, two children from Dellwood Middle School and two children from Clearwater Middle School. Players and coaches from the Bermuda Men’s Basketball team, who represented the country in three Island will work with children aged 6 years to 13 years over a six week period.
