Digicel Scholarship for Sports
March 3rd 2011 - Digicel Scholarship for SportsPurpose: The Digicel Scholarship for Sport responds to the need for Bermudian aspiring athletes to elevate their sporting skills to benefit Bermuda in the international sporting arena.
· The Scholarship will be in the amount of US$20,000 per annum for a period of one year
· The Scholarship will provide an opportunity for a Bermudian student to pursue training in the sport of his/her interest overseas while pursuing a degree at an accredited institution
· In turn, the scholarship recipient will agree to be employed at Digicel Bermuda during any break periods when he/she returns to Bermuda throughout the one-year scholarship period
Description of study: The selected candidate will be awarded a one-year US$20,000 per annum scholarship to be used at either an accredited university or a sports institution overseas for a full term undergraduate degree or similar.
Criteria for all applicants:
· The applicant must be Bermudian
· The applicant must have been born prior to September 1, 1996
Documents required for all applicants:
· Completed and signed application form, available at www.digicelbermuda.com/news
· Certified copy of birth certificate or naturalization document
· Letter of Bermudian status from the Ministry of Home Affairs
· Official transcripts from all secondary/post-secondary institutions attended
· 500 word essay detailing sport of interest, including applicant’s own major accomplishments and future aspirations
· Two character references
· Statement of financial costs and needs
Eligibility Criteria for Overseas Study:
· Achieve overall academic standing of at least a “B” (21 – British or 3.0 – North American)
· Must provide all transcripts from all secondary/post-secondary institutions attended to demonstrate academic achievement
· Meet criteria of character and leadership as outlined in the application form
· The applicant must provide confirmation that he or she has been accepted into an accredited college or university overseas for the 2011/2012 academic year
· Must agree to participate in sport of interest at the accredited college or university throughout the scholarship year
Eligibility Criteria for Overseas Sports Training:
· Must be involved in sports full time
· Must be affiliated with a professional sporting body
· The applicant must provide confirmation that he/she has been accepted into a sports organization/training school for the upcoming year
· A sports schedule must be submitted with application
· Must provide a listing of his/her sporting achievements over the past 2 years
· Must provide sports ranking (if applicable)
